Born in 1956, Takashi Kokubo was at the forefront of kankyo ongaku (environmental music), beginning with Digital Soundology #1 – Volk von Bauhaus (1985) without initially knowing the genre he was working in. Through the late 1980s and early 1990s he released a series of albums, including the ten-part Ion series (1992-93), and became known for acoustic environment design combining sound and visual installation in galleries and museums. His compositions have been used in unexpected everyday contexts, including a Japanese mobile-phone earthquake alert sound. A 2020 compilation featuring his work was Grammy-nominated.
