Sawako (1978-2024) was a classically trained pianist and student of Japanese Noh theatre who divided her time between Tokyo and New York, holding a B.A. from Keio University and a Masters in Interactive Telecommunications from NYU. Beginning in 2001 on small netlabels, she became associated with the 12k and Line labels, releasing albums including Hum (2005), Bitter Sweet, and Madoromi, blending field recordings, instruments, voice, and electronics into what critics called “post-romantic” soundscapes. She also scored films, fashion shows, and multi-channel installations. She died at her family home in Tokyo on March 31, 2024.
