Satoshi Ashikawa (1953-1983) was one of the earliest flag bearers of ambient music in Japan, graduating from Keio Universitys Department of Sociology in 1977 and performing at galleries and cultural spaces through the late 1970s. In 1975 he founded the record and book store Art Vivant in Ikebukuro, Tokyo – one of the first shops in Japan to import Brian Enos Ambient records – which became a hub for the kankyo ongaku scene. In 1982 he co-founded the label Sound Process, releasing the influential Wave Notation series, and recorded his only full-length album, Still Way (1982), featuring percussionist Midori Takada. He described the album as intended to “drift like smoke and become part of the environment.” He died in 1983 at age 30.
