Ryuichi Sakamoto (1952-2023) began composing at four and studied composition, electronic music, and ethnomusicology at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. Co-founder of the internationally influential Yellow Magic Orchestra, he built a solo career spanning film scoring (recognition for The Last Emperor and Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence) and, in his later decades, increasingly austere ambient and modern classical work. Notable late albums included Chasm (2004) and async (2017), exploring atmosphere, stillness, and mortality. He died in 2023.
