Born in Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil, and raised across Brazilian, Mexican, and southwestern U.S. cultures, Porangui is a world-music multi-instrumentalist known for solo improvisational live looping. His ethnomusicology training at Duke University informs a sound built on world percussion, guitar, voice, and indigenous instruments including didgeridoo and pre-Columbian flutes. He leads the ten-piece Afro-Brazilian ensemble Grupo Liberdade and has collaborated with Rising Appalachia, Desert Dwellers, and Ayla Nereo, among others.
