Amethyst – Violet Variety of Quartz
Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz (SiO₂) distinguished by its captivating purple color, which ranges from pale lilac to deep violet. The name “amethyst” derives from the Greek word “amethystos,” meaning “not intoxicated,” reflecting the ancient belief that the stone could prevent drunkenness.
What Causes the Purple Color:
The purple coloration results from trace amounts of iron (Fe³⁺) impurities within the quartz crystal lattice, combined with exposure to natural gamma radiation over geological time. This irradiation causes the iron ions to form color centers that absorb specific wavelengths of light, allowing the purple color to be seen.
Physical Properties:
- Chemical Formula: SiO₂ (silicon dioxide)
- Crystal System: Trigonal
- Hardness: 7 on the Mohs scale (good scratch resistance)
- Luster: Vitreous (glass-like)
- Specific Gravity: Approximately 2.65
Formation & Occurrence:
Amethyst typically forms in geodes within volcanic rocks, where silica-rich fluids deposit crystals over millions of years. Notable sources include Brazil, Uruguay, Madagascar, Russia, Zambia, and Australia.
Historical Significance:
Historically, amethyst was considered one of the cardinal gemstones, valued alongside diamonds, sapphires, rubies, and emeralds. It is the birthstone for February.
Care:
Amethyst can fade if exposed to prolonged sunlight. Store away from direct sunlight and clean with mild soap and water.
