Born in Isfahan, Iran, Hassan Kassai began ney studies in 1947 under Mehdi Navai and later studied with Abolhassan Sabba. Widely regarded as the most influential ney player in the modern history of the instrument, he gave his first solo performance at 20 and is credited with expanding the technical vocabulary of the Persian ney. He died in Isfahan on June 14, 2012, at age 83.
