Born April 12, 1984, in Nicolet, Quebec, Jean-Michel Blais began on the family organ at nine before formal classical training at the Trois-Rivieres conservatory, later moving toward more experimental, improvisational performance after growing disillusioned with strict classical study. He worked for five years in special education with disadvantaged and immigrant families in Montreal before his 2016 debut album, II, amassed over 50 million streams, topped Billboards Canadian Classical chart fourteen times, and earned a Polaris Music Prize longlist nomination. Later work includes the CFCF collaboration Cascades (2017), Dans ma main (2018), Aubades (2022), and the Matthias and Maxime film soundtrack (2019).
