Kazuya Nagaya began as a writer in his twenties before turning to music, composing for broadcast commercials and winning a Hollywood Radio and Television Society finalist prize for Best Use of Sound. His solo career began with Utsuho (1999); working in ambient and world music, he pairs sacred objects from Buddhist and Hindu ritual traditions in Tibet, Bali, and Japan – bronze bells, gongs, and singing bowls – with modern instruments like keyboards and electric guitars. He founded the label ame-ambient for his musical-spiritual explorations and has collaborated with Richie Hawtin, Toshinori Kondo, Carl Stone, and Tibetan Buddhist monks, among others, across eight solo albums.
