Fumio Miyashita
Fumio Miyashita
Born in Nagano in 1949, Fumio Miyashita played rhythm guitar in a rock and roll group as a teenager before co-founding the pioneering progressive and space-rock bands Far Out and Far East Family Band in the mid-1970s. After the groups breakup around 1977, and following a stage injury healed through acupuncture, Miyashita became deeply interested in oriental medicine, studying acupuncture and music therapy. He founded his own label, Biwa Records, in 1985 and released more than a hundred albums of healing, meditation, therapy, and sleep-focused music blending soft electronics with traditional instruments such as bamboo flute. He remained highly active until his death from respiratory failure in 2003.
