Yosi Horikawa grew up in Osaka and began recording found sounds – rice boxes, chopsticks, soup-stock bags – as a twelve-year-old without access to instruments. He later studied architecture and acoustics and became known for weaving field recordings into a granular mix of hip-hop, jazz, ambient, and electronica. His debut album, Vapor (2013), was named Best Album of 2013 by The Japan Times and Fact Magazine; his 2019 album Spaces foregrounds field recording as the primary sound source. A 2014 Red Bull Music Academy documentary, Layered Memories, chronicled his search for unique sounds.
