Deneene, Founder of Sacred Ground

Beneath the Surface with Deneene

Sitting quietly in the same spot every morning, I have come to notice the subtle shifts around me; the leaves outside rustle like whispers of change, each one a reminder of the passage of time. Over the years, this space has absorbed countless moments of stillness, and in doing so, it has shaped me too. I find comfort in the familiar angles of the room and the gentle crinkle of the blanket that warms my lap. The world outside evolves season by season, but here, I am invited to simply be.

There’s a peace that settles deeper with each passing day, like sediment layering in the earth, creating a foundation on which new thoughts can grow. I’ve grown to recognize the feelings that arise in quiet, the flutter of excitement when an idea takes root, or the gentle grief that surfaces like autumn leaves falling, each one a connection to what has been. This practice of stillness, while seemingly simple, has opened up a landscape of understanding in my heart and mind, reflecting the beauty of the changes both around and within me.

With every morning spent here, I find layers of myself revealed, reminding me that within each autumn of life, there is space for renewal, joy, and the richness of stillness. Life, like the changing foliage, teaches us to embrace the vibrancy of transformation, and I cherish this quiet spot that holds my journey.

Beneath the Noise

Beneath the Noise

Each day carries its own emotional texture — a collective mood, a cultural undercurrent, a quality of attention that is either available or scarce. This is not astrology or numerology. It is a quiet read of the human atmosphere.

Nostalgia often sweeps over us like a warm blanket, cradling our hearts while hinting at something deeper — an instinctive desire for connection and belonging. Within those cherished memories lies the protection of what we hold dear: the laughter of old friends, the scents of beloved places, the sweetness of simpler times.

In moments of longing, nostalgia serves as a gentle reminder of love and joy, holding space for the experiences that shaped us. It's an elegant dance between remembering and letting go, offering both comfort and clarity in navigating our present realities.

When we reflect on the past, we often find that the grains of sentimentality are infused with lessons learned and dreams yet to be realized. Through nostalgia, we can orient ourselves, drawing threads from our history into the fabric of who we are becoming today.

This soothing pull of nostalgia invites us to celebrate the richness of our lives while allowing us to acknowledge what we may miss. What memories bring you joy today, and how do they shape your path forward?

  • Moon Waning Gibbous · Gemini
  • Retrograde Mercury, Venus

We are in Scorpio season — a collective backdrop of depth, transformation, and emotional truth running beneath everything. Mercury shapes the day, bringing its quality to decisions, conversations, and where energy naturally wants to flow. The astrological season acts like a filter on collective attention — certain topics feel more alive, certain approaches gain momentum, certain questions push to the surface. Notice what conversations find you, what ideas arrive without being summoned, and where your own energy moves most naturally. With Mercury and Venus retrograde, the season's themes turn inward before they move outward — review and reconsider before you announce or commit.

The Neuroscience of Pain and Its Relationship to Meaning

Researchers have made significant strides in understanding how our brains process pain. Neuroimaging studies have shown that when we experience physical pain, multiple areas of the brain are activated, such as the insula and anterior cingulate cortex. These areas are involved not just in sensing pain but also in evaluating its emotional significance. Studies have demonstrated that the context surrounding pain—like stressful situations or traumatic memories—can amplify the sensation we feel.

At the cellular level, pain begins when specialized nerve cells called nociceptors detect harmful stimuli. These cells send signals to the spinal cord, which relays the information to the brain. In this process, neurotransmitters and inflammatory molecules play crucial roles. For example, substances like substance P can heighten the perception of pain, while endorphins can dampen it. This dance of chemical signals reveals that pain is not merely a physical experience but one deeply influenced by our biological makeup.

Our interpretation of pain can significantly alter our experience of it. For instance, when we assign meaning to pain—like seeing it as a lesson or a challenge—it can shift our emotional response. Research indicates that people who find purpose in their suffering often report lower pain levels. This suggests a strong link between our mental frameworks and our physical sensations, opening a fascinating window into how consciousness shapes human experience.

In the realm of holistic practices, understanding this connection can help inform approaches to healing. Techniques like mindfulness and visualization work by changing the way we perceive and react to pain. As we engage with our inner narratives, we may find new ways to manage discomfort. How can we further explore the role of meaning in our daily experiences with pain?

The Frontier

The Frontier

At the edge of knowing.

Where the known runs out and the interesting questions begin. Real science at the edge of what's been settled — the research that hasn't reached a conclusion yet. The Observatory holds space for both rigor and wonder — not as opposites, but as instruments that work best together.

Recent research has revealed remarkable insights into tree communication, showing that trees can share nutrients and information through underground networks formed by fungi. They can warn one another about pests and diseases using chemical signals. Yet, the extent of this communication remains unresolved. Scientists continue to explore whether trees possess a form of consciousness or intent in these interactions, which challenges our understanding of life forms and communication.

This frontier reshapes how we think about consciousness itself. If trees engage in complex, responsive communication, it blurs the lines separating humans from other life forms. It raises questions about what it means to be aware and connected in the natural world. Our relationships with nature might deepen if we recognize trees as active participants in their ecosystems, rather than passive entities.

What does this frontier make you more curious about?
